    REYNOSA — Mexico’s maquiladoras added thousands of jobs and boosted production in late summer 2009 after a nearly two-year free fall that left thousands unemployed and shuttered dozens of factories, according to statistics from the Mexican government.

    Few said that the statistics released in December by Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI) alone signal recovery, but coupled with the surprising recent acceleration in U.S. manufacturing, the gains in Mexico are bolstering confidence the world’s economy might be on the mend. Analyst said that over the past year, factories were able to sell off inventory after shutting down. Now, with production levels more in line with demand, industry observers said it’s likely Mexico’s factories have reached the bottom.

    AUSTIN – The University of Texas System today announced awards totaling $394,000 to commercialize technologies developed at eight UT System institutions.

    Among the discoveries is a wireless device produced by researchers at UT San Antonio that monitors breathing, which could be used for SIDS, epilepsy and sleep apnea patients. Another discovery, made by researchers at the UT Health Science Center at Houston, could lead to the development of a test using salivary biomarkers for the early detection of breast cancer.     The Lower Rio Grande Valley is sunshine-rich, a major factor behind Brad Bartilson’s decision to relocate to Brownsville from New Jersey. Bartilson is not working on his tan. He’s president and CEO of Photon8, a start-up company researching economically feasible methods for turning algae into biodiesel as an alternative to fossil fuel. For algae to produce the oily "lipids" required for biodiesel, it’s got to be bombarded by sunlight — lots of it. "From a photonic standpoint, New Jersey had 30 percent less photons per square meter falling than here," Bartilson says.

    Bel Fuse will acquire Cinch Connectors from Safran, a French industrial group, for $37.5 million in cash plus approximately $1.5 million for the assumption of certain expenses. The transaction will be funded with cash on hand. Headquartered in Lombard, Illinois and with manufacturing facilities in Vinita, Oklahoma, Reynosa, Mexico and Worksop, England, Cinch had revenue for 2009 of approximately $60 million.
