Mercedes Benz looking for employees at two-day job fair

SAN JUAN — The city’s new Mercedes-Benz dealership doesn’t expect to open its doors for another couple of months, but the company is already looking to hire 30 new employees at a two-day job fair this week.

The groundbreaking for the 30,000-square-foot dealership at 411 Expressway 83 was June 15. It is scheduled to open at the end of this year.

The company needs a variety of employees ranging from sales professionals to service technicians to staff the dealership.

Job seekers will fill out a three-page employment application and go through a five- to 10-minute interview. The final decision, however, will not be made until 30 to 45 days later. Chosen applicants will then go through a final interview with the general manager and will be subjected to a background check, drug screening and driving record inquiry.

“I truly believe Mercedes-Benz is a company that you will be able to grow with,” said Miki McCarthy, executive director of the San Juan Economic Development Corp., which is hosting the job fair. “I definitely recommend anybody who is looking for longevity in a corporation (to attend).”

The dealership is expected to generate an estimated $50,000 in local sales tax each year. That figure, however, does not include tax from car sales, McCarthy said. The amount is derived from the service area and auto parts aspect of the business.

Employment opportunities and sales tax revenue, however, aren’t the only benefits Mercedes-Benz is bringing to the city.

“That corporate brand also brings a lot of exposure,” McCarthy said. “We now have other companies looking within our retail corridor along the expressway simply because Mercedes-Benz decided to.”

McCarthy could not reveal any company names but noted that Pro Angler Marine, a boating retailer, already opened up next to the dealership.
